Meditative Activities

When It’s Just Not Happening…

So you want to meditate. You’ve taken a “How to Meditate” class or subscribed to a meditation app, you’ve created a meditation space and carved out some time each day. You’ve tried to meditate but for some reason you can’t concentrate or you just can’t get into the habit. It just doesn’t “stick.”  What else can you do?

While meditation typically looks like the more formalized approach of “sitting,” as we call it, it actually doesn’t have to.

There are certain everyday activities like eating, writing, washing dishes or walking that can also become meditative AND can be woven into your day in an easier, lighter sort of way. By adopting an attitude of calmness or relaxation and quietly maintaining focus solely on what you are doing even for just 5 minutes, some everyday activities can be meditative and initiate what James Finley calls “spontaneous moment of awareness.”

Practicing a lighter, meditative activity can be yet another a way to show yourself love and compassion, begin to develop a more supportive relationship with the mind and set the stage for your burgeoning meditation practice!

If you have ever tried a meditative activity, what was your experience like? OR, have a question?
